Announcing the 2017 Retreat

In 2016, we committed to hold the 2017 Retreat on the West Coast. However, unfortunately, despite all of our efforts, we were not able to secure a West Coast venue for this year. Instead, we will hold this year's Retreat outside of Philadelphia, PA, the weekend of October 13-15, 2017.

Retreat 2017 Announcement

Exciting Retreat Changes!

The date: Fall 2017

As our normal retreat dates fall during Ramzaan (Ramadan), we are moving the date of the retreat to the fall of 2017. This decision was made for multiple reasons. We are mindful of the challenges to attention, ability to be present with others, and physical comfort that may be experienced by those who fast for Ramzaan. Additionally, by moving the date, we ensure that those who observe Ramzaan and those who do not are not triggered by the space and by others. The retreat is a space to confront and work through those difficult spiritual hurdles that we all struggle with - this combined with fasting might be overwhelming to some.

The location: The retreat will be moving to the west coast this year! We are narrowing down our location for a retreat site, and expect to announce our selection early in the new year.

There are a number of reasons for this. We have loved the retreat space and our hosts, but we have outgrown that location. In recent years, a number of people have expressed concerns about accessibility, which could not be adequately addressed at our previous location. We have been solidly booked each year, as well. While we intend to keep the retreat around the same size, a bit more flexibility on numbers would help us serve our community. In addition, we have received many requests over the years from people who would like to attend a MASGD retreat on the west coast. The need to change locations is a perfect opportunity to make a west coast retreat a reality.

LGBTQ Muslim Retreat in the News

Washington Post coverage of the 2013 Retreat

"At Muslim LGBTQ retreat, attendees try to reconcile their faith and sexuality." Washington Post. May 31, 2013.
Some wore T-shirts that read, “Muslim + Gay = Fabulous.” They prayed. They attended workshops about pioneering progressive Muslims. Ever heard of Isabelle Eberhardt, a.k.a. Mahmoud Saadi, a convert to Islam who challenged gender norms at the turn of the 20th century?"
