Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity

The Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity (MASGD) was invited to the White House Eid Reception on July 21, 2016. After very careful thought and extensive deliberation, MASGD has decided not to attend the event as an organization. We remain deeply critical of the Obama administration and its policies, and MASGD stands in opposition to these violent and racist policies which run counter to our organizational values.

However, we are in a complicated moment in our community’s history, especially after the Orlando tragedy, and as a result, some of us recognize that there may be some value in limited strategic engagement with a variety of institutions and organizations. We recognize that we find ourselves in a difficult position in which some of us seek increased visibility for LGBTQ Muslims in spaces that we have not been traditionally represented in. These spaces include the White House. As a result, several MASGD Steering Committee members have decided to attend in an individual capacity.

The bottom line, however, is that regardless of any single event, we will continue to speak our truth, whether inside the White House, outside it, or online. We affirm that we can and must exist independently of oppressive systems of power. Finally, we affirm the undeniable fact that LGBTQ Muslims exist, we matter, we will not be hidden away, and we will not be silenced: not online, not in the world, and not in  supposed halls of power.
