After much internal deliberation, we are canceling the 2018 LGBT Muslim Retreat and replacing it with two separate, targeted events. We expect the LGBT Muslim Retreat to return in 2019. Please read on for details.
Since October 2017, we have spent a lot of time debriefing about the most recent retreat and what we have learned from seven years of organizing this gathering of our community. We have begun a deliberative process that has included discussions with some of the planning team leaders of the 2017 retreat, in order to help us synthesize all the community feedback we have received. The process of deliberation, dialogue, and discussion is ongoing, but the initial stage has shed light on some important lessons and has informed our decisions about retreat plans for 2018.
First and foremost, we came away from the 2017 retreat with a strong understanding that we must collectively uplift Black queer and trans Muslims, in and beyond our retreat community. To that end, we are committed to supporting the Black Muslims at the Retreat who called for MASGD to financially support a retreat held by and for Black queer and trans Muslims.
In addition, our current discussion around accountability has led us to decide to dedicate our energy this year to holding a roundtable of organizers of our past retreats. This convening will be an opportunity to collect seven years of history, practical knowledge, and tools, which will inform our decisions as we move forward with future retreats.
